The move follows weeks of intense commentary about the singer's appearance and health, a wave of scrutiny that reached a new pitch after the release of the music video for "Petal" and hasn't really let up since. Reading from prepared notes, Grande was keen to make one thing clear to the crowd: this wasn't a decision made in reaction to the noise. It spilled into a wider public argument last week after broadcaster Jameela Jamil weighed in on Grande's appearance, remarks that drew considerable backlash of their own and only added another layer to a conversation Grande herself has now chosen to address on her own terms.
