Van Driven into crowds at Berlin Pride in "Islamist attack"

A manhunt is under way in the German capital after a vehicle attack on Christopher Street Day, one of the largest Pride celebrations in Europe.

One woman has been killed and at least sixteen people injured after a van was driven into a crowd near the closing celebrations of Berlin Pride on Saturday night, in what Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called an attack on the country's society itself.

The white van entered Tiergarten park shortly before 10pm local time, striking several people along a route beside the park before colliding with a tree, only a short distance from the Brandenburg Gate, where thousands were still gathered for the closing party of Christopher Street Day. Police say one or more people then left the vehicle, and that several victims appear to have been stabbed in addition to those struck by the van.

Berlin's fire service confirmed that three people sustained life threatening injuries, with a further eight seriously hurt and five more treated for lighter injuries. The main stage event beside the Brandenburg Gate was halted at around 10.15pm, a band's performance cut short as organisers urged the crowd to leave the area and avoid routes through the park. The city activated a crisis hotline for anyone unable to reach friends or family who had attended.

On Sunday morning, police and prosecutors issued a wanted notice for a 21 year old suspect they named as Abdul B., warning the public that he may be armed and dangerous and should not be approached. A police spokesperson said the suspect was already known to officers as a member of Islamic circles in Berlin, though investigators stressed they had no confirmed information on his motive. An overnight search of a flat in Schöneberg, the district at the heart of Berlin's queer history, found no one present, and the hunt continues across the city.

The attack came at the end of a day that had, until that point, been everything Christopher Street Day is meant to be. Hundreds of thousands of people had marched, danced and celebrated through central Berlin behind some eighty floats, protected by a security operation of more than 2,200 police officers deployed across the capital since the morning. Berlin's mayor Kai Wegner said a peaceful and vibrant parade, and a rally for a tolerant city, had been attacked.

For those who were there, the shift from celebration to horror was instant. One attendee, on his way to an after party when word of the emergency response reached him, described it simply as a dark day for the community.

It is a description that will resonate far beyond Berlin. Christopher Street Day carries the name of the street in New York where the Stonewall uprising began, and the city's Pride has long stood as one of the most visible expressions of queer life anywhere in Europe. That visibility has always carried risk, and Berlin knows the horror of vehicle attacks all too well, from the Breitscheidplatz Christmas market atrocity of 2016 to the car driven into shoppers on Tauentzienstrasse in 2022. What happened on Saturday night, though, struck directly at a community gathered to celebrate its own existence.

Investigators have not yet formally declared a motive, and Outcast World will update this story as the picture becomes clearer. What is already clear is that a woman went to Pride on Saturday and did not come home, that sixteen more people are injured, three of them fighting for their lives, and that queer communities across Europe will wake this week grieving alongside Berlin, defiant as ever, but reminded once again of why visibility remains an act of courage.
