Crystal M: still big with the gays
Crystal Methyd has been crowned the winner of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 11, ending one of the most eventful seasons in the franchise's history with a finale that delivered drama, disco and a lip-sync gauntlet worthy of the Hall of Fame.
The Missouri queen, first beloved by fans as the runner-up of season 12, where her surrealist aesthetic and gentle weirdness made her an instant cult favourite, saw off a formidable top six of A'keria C. Davenport, Jasmine Kennedie, Silky Nutmeg Ganache, Dawn and Joey Jay to take the crown. For a performer whose brand has always been art-school oddball rather than pageant assassin, it is a victory that feels like a win for every queen who was ever told her drag was too strange to go all the way.
The finale did not arrive without turbulence. The episode opened with the queens dissecting their Rate-A-Queen scores from the Tournament of All Stars Talent Rumble, and tensions boiled over as Davenport and Kennedie challenged each other's marks over questions of originality, a disagreement that spilled onto social media in the days before the episode aired. It was a reminder that the Rate-A-Queen format, in which the contestants score one another, remains the franchise's most reliable drama generator, turning every critique into a potential feud.
Once the scores were settled and a final sisterly heart-to-heart concluded, the season resolved itself the old-fashioned way: a LaLaPaRuZa lip-sync smackdown, staged this time as a Disco Smackdown for the Crown, with the queens in their finest eighties-inflected looks battling through classics from Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Amii Stewart and Cheryl Lynn. One by one, Dawn, Davenport, Silky and Kennedie fell in fierce eliminations, leaving Crystal Methyd and Joey Jay to contest the crown in a final showdown to Donna Summer's MacArthur Park, a song choice that felt engineered in a laboratory to produce maximum drag pathos.
There is something satisfying about the final pairing itself. Joey Jay, memorably self-described in season 13 as filler, fought all the way to a lip-sync for the crown, a redemption arc the show does better than almost any other format on television, while Crystal completed the journey from fan favourite to Hall of Famer six years after Jaida Essence Hall pipped her to the season 12 title in the strange lockdown finale of 2020.
All Stars 11 ran three brackets of returning queens through twists, feuds and elevated runway drag, and the season will be remembered as one of the stronger recent entries in a franchise that has occasionally strained under its own volume of output. In Crystal Methyd it has produced a winner who represents the show's better instincts: reward the artistry, embrace the weird, and trust that the strangest queen in the room might just be the star.
