WWE star Evil Gay makes history as first openly gay singles champion

WWE star Evil Gay makes history as first openly gay singles champion

Aaron Rourke, the wrestler known as Evil Gay, has made WWE history after becoming the first openly gay singles champion.

The Long Island performer won the WWE Evolve Championship on 18 March, defeating Jackson Drake with his finishing move, the Molly Go Round, in front of a packed crowd.

But it was what happened after the match that really got people talking.

Rourke broke down in tears as the referee raised his hand, his full stage makeup still intact. He later shared a message to his younger self. The road will be long and hard at many points for you kid, but keep your head up. Someday your dreams will come true.

The post quickly spread across social media, with fans calling the moment historic, emotional and long overdue.

A huge moment for LGBTQ+ representation in WWE

Professional wrestling has not exactly been known as an LGBTQ+ safe space.

For decades, it has been built around a very specific, hyper masculine image, one that has not always left much room for openly queer performers.

Rourke’s win marks a clear shift.

He joined WWE’s Independent Development programme in late 2024 as the first openly LGBTQ+ wrestler in that system. He has also spoken about being told he was too girly to succeed in wrestling.

He did not tone anything down.

From the name Evil Gay to the dramatic looks, feathers, makeup and full camp energy, Rourke has built his persona without compromise.

Now it has taken him all the way to a championship title.

Fans react with support and celebration

Reaction online was immediate.

Fans flooded his posts with messages of support. One wrote, You did this for us. Another said, One of the most inspiring people I have ever seen in wrestling.

Others leaned into full queer internet energy. CLOCK IT appeared repeatedly in the comments, alongside The divas are up and LETS FREAKIN GOOOO.

That mix of sincerity and chaos says a lot about where things are now.

Why this matters

It is easy to be cynical about firsts, especially in big corporate environments like WWE.

But moments like this still matter.

Rourke is still one of only a small number of openly LGBTQ+ male wrestlers under WWE contract, which shows how rare this remains.

More importantly, he has not reshaped himself to fit wrestling.

He has brought queerness into a space that historically excluded it and succeeded on his own terms.

And now he is not just part of WWE.

He is at the top of it.
